DESCRIPTION:The American Fisheries Society and the AFS Florida Chapter are excited to host the 147th AFS Annual Meeting at the Tampa Convention Center from August 20–24\, 2017. Tampa will be an attractive venue to unveil this year’s conference theme\, “Fisheries Ecosystems: Uplands to Oceans.” We foresee a wide range of sessions that span interdisciplinary research and management approaches to improve aquatic resources. SUMMARY:Society of Wetland Scientists Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Society of Wetland Scientists’ 2017 Annual Meeting will be held at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan\, Puerto Rico\, June 5-8\, 2017. This unique meeting is themed Celebrating Wetland Diversity Across the Landscape: Mountains to Mangroves. \nThe program will highlight the interdisciplinary nature of wetland science and practice\, how wetlands function\, and how protection and restoration play an significant role in the health of our ecosystems and society. The importance of using sound science to inform management strategies and enhance environmental values to society will also be emphasized. There are many linkages among wetland science\, application\, economics\, and policy which are sure to engage the diverse membership of SWS including researchers\, practitioners\, regulators\, and policymakers. This meeting will also be a prime opportunity to engage the public and private wetland professionals with field trips and workshops that will focus on current wetland topics and issues. \nSan Juan was strategically selected as the host destination for this event in order to further underline the theme of diversity as there are significant connections between protecting and restoring wetlands in Puerto Rico\, providing ecosystem services\, and the resulting economic returns in the U.S. and abroad\, including in Mexico\, the Caribbean\, and in Central and South America.

DESCRIPTION:The 2017 meeting of the Phycologial Society of America is coming up! \nWe have an excellent selection of keynote speakers to address the past\, present\, and future of algal endeavors\, including Mike Guiry and Laura Rogers-Bennett. We also have a bevy of fantastic symposia\, including Picophytoplankton in a Changing World (J. Jeffrey Morris)\, The Ecology of Macroalgal Blooms (the PSA Presidential Symposium\, Tim Nelson)\, and Non-Aquatic (terrestrial\, subaerial\, etc.) Algae (Nicole Pietrasiak). \nOur excellent education committee is planning several workshops\, including\, but not necessarily limited to\, An Introduction to Metabarcoding Data Analysis (Emily Johnson) and Balancing Science Communication and Science: Achieving Effective Outreach Using Social Media (Susan von Thun). We will also have opportunities to explore the local region\, with copious details to follow in the near future.
